New projects: actually I'm meeting my agent at the Pacific Northwest Writers Conference on Friday. Heading in tomorrow to have dinner with Terry Brooks who I taught with at Maui for many years. I've got my wife doing a line by line edit of The Jefferson Allegiance. And I'm looking hard at my manuscript Chasing the Ghost which we never marketed. But I'm stopping and applying my Warrior Writer concept to myself-- coming up with a strategic five year goal. That takes time and asking for help.

I've tried just bout everything trying to market fiction. It's damn near impossible but you have to try. In reality, the best marketing you can do is write better books. I think you really need to balance your time and effort. Some people do too much marketing and not enough writing. I think building a "platform" is key, something I focus on in Warrior Writer. Become the expert at something- find a niche. Even in fiction you can do those. You're an expert on wines? You write murder mysteries set in wine country with a wine expert as protagonist. Not only are you building your platform, you are focusing your marketing. I do Warrior Writer because one day, duh, it occurred to me that's what I was: an ex-Green Beret best-selling author. A unique combination of background. My platform.

*raises hand* INFJ here. Promo is my hell, but I have learned to speak in front of a crowd over the years (afterwards I must be alone for at least 12 hours). I can't wait to see you at the New Jersey RWA chapter conference!
