And so the torch has been passed.
Whether you’re remembering that famous line from JFK’s stirring speech or from the Olympics, it deserves a moment of reflection, a moment of respect.
In taking up the reins of the mighty powerhorse that is Romance University, Jen, Becke, Robin and I want you, our followers to know we do not take this moment lightly. We are thrilled and honored – yes, honored – to have worked with Kelsey, Adrienne and Tracey. The guests we’ve had on board the past three years have been stellar, the posts outstanding.
And we intend to keep it that way. =)
And now – a little mushiness from the new RU crew -
Carrie – A little over two years ago, Romance University put up a “Help Wanted” ad, looking for someone to join their little staff. I hemmed and hawed for all of three minutes, then dove in head first. I WANTED that job! A short time later it was mine, and not only could I read these great posts by even greater authors, but I could be a part of the team that lured these people to post here.
Even before my first official post on May 15, 2010, celebrating RU’s first anniversary, I’d followed the blog. When respected authors, editors and agents offer FREE tidbits to me? A budding author? You bet, I’m jumping in again.
My deepest gratitude to Tracey, Kelsey and Adrienne for starting this wonderful resource. My love goes with you always, and I know we’ll be BFF’s if ever we shall meet face-to-face. Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives.
Jen- There are lots of writer-centric websites on the Internet. But I’ve always liked RU because of its varied content and sense of community. When I was asked to join the faculty two years ago, I was flattered.
And then I went into full panic mode.
I’d been blogging for a few months, but I was still learning the ins and outs of WordPress. I had enough trouble coming up with topics for my own blog so naturally I freaked out thinking I wouldn’t be able to offer any worthwhile content.
But during my indoctrination, I learned a few things about myself. I’m not a techie person. I worried that I’d crash the site while I put up my first post. Yes, it took me a few tries, but I managed (with a lot of help) to get it right. Being tech-savvy is a huge plus. If it weren’t for RU, I’d still be muddling through.
I also discovered that romance authors are a generous bunch. The authors I invited to blog with us graciously accepted and were incredibly generous with their time and wisdom. We’ve had several posts on the same topic, but I love that each author offers a unique point of view.
I’m grateful that Kelsey, Adrienne and Tracey started RU. It’s a wonderful place where writers (and not just romance writers) can learn and exchange ideas. I’ve had the opportunity to meet other writers and follow their journey to publication. I was lucky to share the excitement when Adrienne and Tracey sold their first book.
I hope our readers will continue to support RU and use it as a resource. Most of all, I give my heartfelt thanks to Kelsey, Tracey and Adrienne for making it possible.
Becke – It’s been 1 1/2 years since I was invited to join Romance University—the time has flown! At first I worried I was going to fail RU boot camp, also known as behind-the-scenes training. I didn’t realize what a slow learner I was until faced with the technical aspects of RU. I’m sure I drove everyone nuts with my constant questions, but I did eventually figure it out. (Mostly.)
From Day One I was hugely impressed with the professionalism of the site and the dedication of everyone on the team. Tracey, Adrienne and Kelsey deserve major credit for coming up with the idea for Romance University, for implementing their ideas and for sustaining a high level of quality information for writers over several years. During this same period, Tracey and Adrienne were writing, submitting and ultimately selling their first (and second, and more…) books, and Kelsey was writing and moving not just cross-country, but halfway across the world. I am in awe of their accomplishments and wish them all great success.
I’ve had a great time hanging out here – not just with Tracey, Adrienne and Kelsey, but also Carrie, Jennifer and Robin. The RU team ROCKS! I’ve bookmarked more blogs by our Visiting Professors than I can count. Each of our guests brings something unique, and I always come away with newly gained knowledge. I know I’ve said it before, but it would really help if there was a way to instantly download every new RU post to my brain so I could access all that information on demand.
I’m still plodding away, writing and revising. I wish I’d entered the world of fiction fifteen years ago instead of only five—did I mention I’m a slow learner? Good thing I’m also stubborn as all get-out. I’m not giving up! 2012 is a milestone year for me: I’m going to become a grandmother this summer and, in a related event, I’m moving back to Chicago. It’s a year of new beginnings for me, and also for RU. In the words of Jenny Crusie, “nothing but blue skies ahead!”
Robin – I’m the newbie here at RU but I was a long-time follower of the blog. I was impressed by the caliber of the guests and the professionalism of the site and checking in every Monday-Wednesday-Friday became a necessity. Imagine my surprise when I received an email on Friday, May 13th 2011 asking me to join as a faculty member. (Some lucky things do happen on that day!) I’ll be a big girl and admit that I was daunted by the request and worried that I couldn’t live up to the RU standard.
I quickly got over myself and jumped at the chance to be part of something so awesome.
Once again I proved to myself that the best things happen when you just say yes.
I cannot express my gratitude for the amazing opportunities RU has given to me or for the gift of friendship with all of the RU crew. These women are truly the real deal. I am humbled that Tracy, Adrienne, and Kelsey trust us with their baby. We will not let them down and won’t let you – the reader- down either.

The New RU
There will be a few changes, we’d like to announce them now. First, we’re bringing in two new faculty members – a husband and wife team, Dave and MJ Thome. Dave and MJ, we’re happy to have you aboard!
We’ve added to our regular list of fantabulous contributors – Theresa Stevens, Sara Megibow and Laurie Schnebly Campbell – with Handsome Hansel, Ruth Harris and Adam Firestone. Toni McGee Causey will join us several times a year to teach writing workshops.
On the sidebar, we’ve included a link to Feedburner, so you can receive excerpts of our posts via email if you so desire.
We’ll be adding new features to our Facebook page, including writing links we think you’d like to know about.
But even with the changing of the guard and the passing of the flame, the most important thing we want you to know is that RU will always strive to provide the best – for you, our readers.
You deserve it.

Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 7:35 amHi,
The torch burns brightly because it is in capable hands. You went JFK, but don’t forget the Olympics. Writing requires stamina, endurance, and innovation. The new crew has it all and then some. Look forward to your ideas.

Posted by Mary Jo Burke | June 8, 2012, 5:42 amMary Jo…you are absolutely correct – writing requires stamina, endurance and innovation! You nailed it….=) Thanks for being with us here today!

Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 7:37 amLadies, I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that you have taken over the care of our “baby.” RU holds a special place in my heart and if we hadn’t had the right people to take over, I would not have agreed to letting anyone else run it.
I’m so excited for RU’s future. You have a stellar lineup planned and it’ll be nice to just be a plain old reader who can learn from the blog without having to worry about running it!
Thank you again. Over these past couple of years, you’ve all made my life easier in so many ways. I’m incredibly grateful for all the work and dedication you’ve given RU.
Go RU!
Posted by Adrienne Giordano | June 8, 2012, 6:26 amAdrienne, I promise we’ll take good care of your baby! =) We’ve got some great new contributors coming aboard and we’ll really make ‘er sing.
Posted by Carrie Spencer | June 8, 2012, 6:49 amAdrienne – This week is very bittersweet. It’s great that you’ve sold so many books, and we all understand that your focus needs to be on your career. But we are going to miss you!
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 7:53 amHappy to be a part of both the old and the new RU. Looking forward to bringing that “little something extra” to the readers that might get their hearts to race just a bit.
Of course, given that it’s ME, the little something extra might have more to do with precision guided munitions, plastic explosives and long range riflery than romance…
Posted by Adam Firestone | June 8, 2012, 6:39 amlol Adam…I can’t tell you how many writers are THRILLED to see you here – romance seems to mix quite nicely with plastic explosives!
Posted by Carrie Spencer | June 8, 2012, 6:50 am“Is that a Claymore Clacker in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?”
Posted by Adam Firestone | June 8, 2012, 6:56 ambahahahahahaha….oh we’re going to have a blast with you! =)

Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 7:56 amAdam! You are smart man to bring munitions to this rodeo! Welcome! Robin
Posted by Robin Covington | June 8, 2012, 7:49 amMunitions and a level IV vest….
Posted by Adam Firestone | June 8, 2012, 8:01 amGuns and romance. What could be better? Welcome, Adam!
Posted by Jennifer Tanner | June 8, 2012, 3:32 pmUmm…guns, romance and barbeque?
Posted by Adam Firestone | June 8, 2012, 3:34 pmIf we’ve got men on staff now, I suppose there must be barbecue!
Posted by Jennifer Tanner | June 8, 2012, 3:47 pmIs it dinnertime yet?
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 3:55 pmAnd beer!
Posted by Adrienne Giordano | June 8, 2012, 4:11 pmPersonally speaking, precision guided munitions do it for me! LOL.

Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 7:39 amHi All, I’m a little nervous at the thought of holding a writing workshop (who? moi?) and a lot excited at being here at RU.
Just so you know: I’m a former editor (Bantam, Dell) and publisher (Kensington). I’m also a NYT bestselling author of romantic women’s fiction.
I’m a bit gritty, a tad snarky, but always, always go for the happy ending after HEA. Because, as we all know, there’s Romance & then there Life. Which is what turns HEA into LEA (Love Ever After).
Posted by Ruth Harris | June 8, 2012, 7:41 amI won your book from RU and just finished it. Excellent! A very Mad Men feel because its set in the early 1960s.
Posted by Mary Jo Burke | June 8, 2012, 8:00 amThank you, Mary Jo. So glad you enjoyed DECADES. Matt Weiner was smart to pick the time period he did & also smart to get those gorgeous Saul Bass-type titles. The early 60′s were a (very) different time and place and yet also very relevant because so much has changed—but so much hasn’t.
Posted by Ruth Harris | June 8, 2012, 8:27 amRuth – Nervous and excited is pretty much my normal state here, so I can definitely relate!
Your credentials are AWESOME! Thank you so much for joining the RU team – we’re lucky to have you on board!
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 8:01 amHi Becke, you, too? Nervous & excited? And it’s your normal state? Oy.
Seriously, thanks for the warm welcome! It means a lot to the new kid in town.
Posted by Ruth Harris | June 8, 2012, 8:30 amRuth we’re thrilled to have you on board! And we love snarky……=)
Posted by Carrie Spencer | June 8, 2012, 8:07 amThanks, Carrie. So you love snarky? In that case, I guess I’ll fit right in!
Posted by Ruth Harris | June 8, 2012, 8:31 amRuth, sounds like you’ll be a perfect fit!
Posted by Tracey Devlyn | June 8, 2012, 7:05 pmCongratulations to all of you! I look forward to what is in store for the future of RU!

Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 8:53 amCarrie, Jen, Becke & Robin -
I feel like I should say something profound today, but I doubt it’s possibly for me to say something profound enough to describe how much you’ve all brought to RU over the past few years. Without your help, I feel certain Adrienne, Tracey and I would have had to say good-bye to RU much earlier.
Thank you for loving RU enough to take it and now make it your own. I can’t wait to see all the wonderful things you’ll do. Your new columnist line-up is fabulous!
Big, big hugs all around!
Kels
Posted by Kelsey Browning | June 8, 2012, 9:00 amWe’re really going to miss you! I hope you’ll stay in touch – I want to hear what happens with your stories!

Posted by Robin Covington | June 8, 2012, 2:00 pmI have to learn WordPress? I have to learn? No one told me that. I thought all I had to do was dish out grades.
Whatever. Bring it on, Internet! (Becke, I’ll be in touch.)
Posted by Dave Thome | June 8, 2012, 9:18 amDave – It seems everyone but me gets WordPress automatically. Robin didn’t seem to have a single question when she joined us. I, on the other hand, felt like it was my first day of school. And I have a WordPress blog!! Call me Techno-Klutz!
If anyone is dishing out grades, I hope there’s a big curve!
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 9:46 amOh, yeah, Dave’s into curves.
Posted by MJ | June 8, 2012, 10:18 am*snort*
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 11:46 amDave, you’ll be a WordPress wiz by the time we’re through with you…mwahahahahaha
Welcome aboard!
Posted by Carrie Spencer | June 8, 2012, 1:24 pmWordPress is a breeze. Just drop me a line and I’ll help you out. If I can’t bring down the site – you can’t either!
Posted by Robin Covington | June 8, 2012, 2:02 pmLOL – the old bait and switch maneuver. WTG, ladies!
Posted by Tracey Devlyn | June 8, 2012, 7:07 pmAnother vote for nervous and excited, with a dash of explosives.
I’m pleased to be joining such a strong, professional, welcoming community. Following my husband’s interest in romance sure gets me into interesting places.
Ba-dum-dum-BOOM.
Posted by MJ | June 8, 2012, 9:36 amJust a dash of explosives? You aren’t trying hard enough….
Posted by Adam Firestone | June 8, 2012, 9:42 amOh, MJ, you’ve done it now! Adam is all about the Ba-dum-dum-BOOM!
Something tells me this year is going to go off with a big bang!

Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 9:48 amlol….Welcome MJ! I can tell we’re going to have a bang-up time here….;)
Posted by Carrie Spencer | June 8, 2012, 1:25 pmWelcome aboard, MJ and Dave! I’m a lurker on Dave’s blog. So glad you have you both with us!
Posted by Jennifer Tanner | June 8, 2012, 3:31 pmMJ, when the nerves are coming on, please remember RU’s a safe place. It’s one of the many things I love about this blog. Big thanks to you and Dave for joining the team.

Posted by Kelly Wolf | June 8, 2012, 9:45 amI agree, Kelly – change is never easy. It helps to know that our founding members are leaving for exciting reasons, as they climb the road to success. We will do our best to carry on the torch they lit!

I want to thank all of you for the warm wishes and support. This romance biz is just chock full of amazing people.
And – to the new contributors- it is SO NICE not to be the newbie any longer! ; ) Welcome!
Posted by Robin Covington | June 8, 2012, 9:57 amHail, hail the gangs all here. Congrats to the new team, long may you reign.
I’ve enjoyed Romance U for quite a while and I can totally empathize with Carrie as to not being very techie, in fact every time I answer a question on the B&N site I end up with computer on my face.
Another reason I love to visit is because my most special BFF is here Becke and those who know her have to love her and will follow her anywhere like me.
So I know not to say goodbye to the creators as we may see them guest posting here some time, and to the new torch carriers, Carrie, Becke, Jen & Robin my hats off to you.

Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 2:24 pmWow, talk about sustaining great work from the original team with MORE great ideas from the new team!
You four are all so nice about replying to everyone’s posts, let me ask you each a question that won’t require a whole lot of thought:
What’s the most fun thing you have planned for this weekend?
Laurie, whose weekend won’t start for another few hours so I envy you folks farther east
Posted by Laurie Schnebly Campbell | June 8, 2012, 3:37 pmHmm. Well, this weekend is going to be a work-weekend for me. I’ve got requests for two stories I’m still revising, for one thing. I have a deadline looming for a garden article. And we’re getting the house ready to put up for sale, so I have a gazillion books to pack up. The weekends are never long enough!!
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 4:02 pmSorry, Laurie, I forgot to say thank you for your thought-provoking question. It wasn’t as easy to answer as I thought it would be!
Thanks for sticking with us – we appreciate it!
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 4:04 pmOh, Becke, the fact that it wasn’t an easy answer means you SURE don’t have the kind of life where there’s only room for one exciting event per weekend!
Posted by Laurie Schnebly Campbell | June 8, 2012, 4:08 pmLast weekend I went to Lori Foster’s Reader Author Get Together. That exceeded my excitement quota for the month!!
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 4:18 pmHi Laurie!
We’re going to set up a humane trap for our cat that’s been missing since March. And we’re having dinner at a Brazilian barbecue place in San Francisco with my husband’s printing press installation crew who are in from Tennessee. They arrived with their own barbecue and crockpots, and set up camp in the office kitchen. Should be an interesting evening!
Posted by Jennifer Tanner | June 8, 2012, 5:09 pmI hope the humane trap works! It would be wonderful if you found your cat after all this time.
Sounds like Adam hit the nail on the head with you and barbecues – yum!!
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 5:26 pmLaurie!! =) So happy to see you here….my weekend plans involve work and um…work. =) with any luck there might be some reading and writing in there as well!
Posted by Carrie Spencer | June 8, 2012, 9:36 pmI am tickled pink for you all!
Good luck to Becke, Carrie, Jen and Robin in taking on new challenges and providing us with more wonderful, informational posts to help and inspire writers that RU has become known for. They couldn’t have found a finer bunch of ladies to pass the torch to. Best wishes for continuing success!!
Posted by Linda | June 8, 2012, 5:13 pmThanks so much, Linda! We’re following in big footsteps, that’s for sure!
Posted by Becke Martin Davis | June 8, 2012, 5:26 pmHola Linda!

Posted by Mary E. Ulrich | June 9, 2012, 7:36 amI’m a big fan of Dave & MJ; Dave’s tweets brought me here. I’m going to enjoy looking around here!

Posted by Lena | June 9, 2012, 12:21 pmThis is so exciting. Having a flexible staff to carry on is what can keep a blog like this going strong. Most blogs last about three years, but RU has grown instead of petering out. Congrats!
And of course you’re very wise to take Ruth Harris on board. She’s been my blog partner for the last year and the blog keeps growing in popularity. Ruth knows the publishing business from both sides and is a wealth of solid information.
