Reader Roundup – Valentine’s Day Reads with Amy Alessio

For several years, my library has been celebrating an Un-Valentine’s event with teens. Not everyone thinks the red, heart shaped holiday is so fabulous. Some of these stories feature Valentine’s Days or Mr Wrongs in humorous escapist reads. But guarantee a happy ending by reading these or any kind of romance for the big day (or really, any other time of the year).
And, checking in, how are you doing with the 2014 reading challenge? For the last post of 2013, I suggested we all commit to reading 50 romance stories of 150 pages or more this year. So far, I’ve read 7, including a couple really fabulous ones that you’ll see in an upcoming Roundup here. What are you reading?
Despite the heart themed cover, the three delightful contemporary romances in Be Mine are more about women finding their right one than Valentine’s Day. Jennifer Crusie, Victoria Dahl and Shannon Stacey feature three ladies who realize that the men who are giving them speeding tickets or just getting under their skin are really reaching them on an entirely different level.
Rachel Gibson wants readers to know that The Trouble with Valentine’s Day is that romance does not seem to be found in Gospel, Idaho. Kate is a PI and Rob is an ex pro hockey player and both have encountered tragedy they struggle with until they realize it is easier with the right person beside them. Gibson manages to add humor and a fun supporting cast in her hallmark style even when dealing with serious issues.
Bestseller Jodi Thomas and three other strong authors bring Valentine’s Day mishaps and romance to 1800’s Texas in Be My Texas Valentine. From the marshall to the mayor, romance blooms among the outlaws and saloons.
MaryJanice Davidson, Leslie Esdaile and Susanna Carr know that the heart shaped holiday can mean broken dates, disappointment and even dead bodies? Enjoy their take on why Valentine’s day is Killing Me.
Known for sweet and funny but realistic contemporaries, Debbie Macomber reminds readers why she is so popular again with Be My Valentine, a collection of two previously published novellas. These feature funny kids who want to help their mother find Mr. Right, and an author who needs a hero to model for her book.
If sweet is not your style, try A Red Hot Valentine’s Day showcasing four rising erotica authors who add plenty of teasing, steam and in some cases, even a little paranormal influences to their holiday short stories.
One house in Harlem houses four ladies on different floors in this anthology of Diamond Playgirls, including a story from bestseller Daaimah S. Poole. It’s fun to see characters appear in each other’s stories, even if briefly. They all have dreams, and some are hoping they will come true on Valentine’s Day, but they all have each other’s back on that day.
What’s your favorite Valentine’s Day read or movie?
