Reader Roundup – Romantic Rakes with Amy Alessio

Bad boys were appealing even in Regency times, it seems. These transformation stories add spice to the strict ballroom and ton societal rules of those days.
In Mary Jo Putney’s The Rake, Lady Alys Weston is trying to disguise herself as a man to get a job as manager of the long neglected Strickland site. Reginald Davenport is trying to escape his past misdeeds by staking his claim as heir, only to find out that he is falling for his new estate manager. A rewritten version of an older title, these characters are memorable and winning.
Stephanie Laurens writes about many fascinating rakes, including Vane Cynster in A Rake’s Vow. Vane tries to escape marriage hunters from the ton only to find the woman of his dreams after taking shelter from a storm. Patience trusts no man after her parents’ disastrous marriage, but her sizzling attraction to Vane makes her rethink her position.
In her debut book, Nine Rules to Break when Romancing a Rake, Sarah MacLean introduced readers to Callie, a proper girl overlooked by suitors. After her younger sister’s engagement, she decides to take her life into her own hands and begins to follow a list of daring escapades. Her long crush, Gabriel St. John, can’t ignore the woman who asks him for a kiss and tries to fence. Refreshingly different, Callie launched an exciting Regency author.
Enjoy Suzanne Enoch’s A Beginner’s Guide to Rakes as it follows feisty widow Diane Bentley as she tries to open a gentleman’s gaming club. Marquis Oliver Warren is blackmailed into helping her when she threatens to reveal details of a past activity they shared. Soon he realizes he does not mind helping her as they discover an irresistible attraction.
Anna Campbell invites readers to sample A Rake’s Midnight Kiss. Genevieve Barrett has secretly authored her father’s articles for years and doesn’t know what to do when one of his students arrives at their home. She recognizes him as the masked thief who tried to rob them earlier, too. Sir Richard Harmsworth wants an important jewel from the home to cement his rightful place in society. They soon find common ground in this exciting battle of wills.
Jewels and secrets also abound in Shana Galen’s fun If You Give a Rake a Ruby. Fallon, the Marchioness of Mystery, is a notable courtesan. Warren Fitzhugh is undercover, trying to get a notorious crime lord for his work in the Foreign Office. He uses her past as a pickpocket to blackmail her into helping him with his mission, only to find that their off the page chemistry draws them into a deep romantic relationship.
And the Miss Ran Away with the Rake joins the other sensual fun titles in Elizabeth Boyle’s Rhymes with Loves series. Miss Daphne Dale answers an ad looking for a sensible lady despite her reluctance towards romance, only to find her attentions captured by the totally wrong Lord Henry Seton instead. Why can’t she fall for the sweet Mr. Dishforth instead? Readers will enjoy her dilemma.
When Regency rules get broken, mayhem – and delightful romance ensue.
