FAQ:

Q: What kind of nut for GMC 2500 rear axle?

A: The nut is a 6 slot – I see lots of universal 6 pin axle nut sockets but none of them mention fitting 2011 GMC 2500 rear axle but list a whole ton of other compatible vehicles. Many auto parts stores ‘rent’ these tools.

Q: Can a GM axle nut be removed from a Silverado?

A: This is the special GM socket that will remove the replacement OEM axle nuts on my 2011 Silverado Duramax 2500HD. GM did it again, the hub nut kits at AutoZone won’t fit and damaged the OEM nuts getting them off, the replacement OEMs fit this nut perfectly.

Q: How big is the nut on the rear axle?

A: Lots of Km. Turns out that the axle nut is a 9 slot with 3 protruding pins/tabs. So realistically the correct socket probably looked like a 2&5/8″ with three 3/8″ notches cut into it. Or it may be machined perfectly to fit the 9 slots between the protruding pins and the axle. Who knows- pain in the ass!

Q: Can you remove the hub from a rear axle nut?

A: You can not remove the hub without destroying the two piece seal, you literally have to pry the hub off. When doing the reinstallation the torque applied to the nut is to seat the new seal into place on the axle housing. That is what makes it a two piece seal. Dean Well something must have changed from your 04 to my 08 LMM.
