Black Elephant Ear Bulb "Diamond Head" - Colocasio Esculenta Size 7 cm Marde Ross & Company
  • Diamond Head Elephant Ear Bulb - Give them filtered sun or shade and rich, moist soil. They're grown from tuberous rhizomes and can reach impressive sizes quickly. Watering: These are high water plants. The more water they get the bigger they’ll grow. Some varieties will even thrive when planted in a pot and grown as a marginal pond plant. (Pot fully submerged.) Containers will need to be watered daily during the summer. Plan on giving plants at least 2-3 inches of water per week.
  • Planting: When planting new elephant ears or re-planting for the spring, set corms in the garden when nighttime temperatures are consistently 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant 4-6 inches deep. (The bigger the bulb the deeper it goes.) Most elephant ears will grow to be at least 4 feet wide, so give them space!
  • Fertilizing: Elephant ears are heavy eaters, as well as drinkers. Fertilize monthly with a general fertilizer of choice. Organic slow release fertilizers will last longer, so choose something like bonemeal or bloodmeal when possible.
  • Hardy in Zones 9-11
  • Marde Ross & Company has been a Licensed California Nursery since 1985.

IB Prosperity 1 Bulb of Elephant Ears Colocasia Esculenta Black Magic Size 7-9 cm Bulb
  • Locate colocasia where the soil is moist. If you live in a climate with hot summers, Colocasia benefits from partial or full shade. In cooler climates, sunlight brings out the bright colors of the leaves. Either way, protect the plant from hot afternoon sunlight.
  • Dig a hole for each Colocasia bulb, using a shovel or trowel. Plant each bulb 8 to 10 inches deep with the pointy end facing down. Water generously, providing enough water to saturate the soil around the roots. Unlike many plants, you can't over water Colocasia.
  • Water as needed to keep the soil consistently moist, and don't allow the soil to become dry. Colocasia likes wet soil and is even appropriate for planting next to a pond, or in water up to 6 inches deep. Check the soil often if the bulbs are planted in sunlight.
  • Allow the foliage to remain on the plant until the leaves turn yellow in autumn. Green leaves store energy to feed the bulbs for growth the following season. Some varieties remain green all winter, especially in warmer climates.
  • Dig Colocasia bulbs after the first frost in autumn if you live in a climate with cold winters. Cut the foliage down to 2 to 4 inches before cutting. Allow the bulbs to dry for a day, and then place the bulbs in a box of wood shavings or peat moss. Store the box where the temperatures don't drop below 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
